The musicologist Miguel Ángel Marín has studied the reception of this work in nineteenth-century Spain, concluding that it reached cities such as Orihuela, Olot and Málaga—as well as Seville, Madrid and Barcelona—before it arrived in many other European towns, Oxford among them.
It is now known that Mozart completed only the Introit in its entirety. The Kyrie and the Sequence were largely composed by Mozart, although Süssmayr completed them. The Offertory, also begun by Mozart, was finished by his pupil. The following two movements were composed entirely by Süssmayr.
