Agua Larga: Traditional & Imaginary Cimarron Music

Agua Larga is an immersion in the Afro-Ecuadorian culture of Esmeraldas Province in north-western Ecuador. How is this centuries-old culture, born from the history of slavery and maroon communities, inscribed sonically in the everyday lives of its inhabitants? On the banks of the Cayapas River, in a sugarcane field, on a beach of the South Pacific or in the port of Esmeraldas, musical material enters into dialogue with soundscapes, stories, poetry and voices that speak and sing.

Like the sounds of everyday life, its rhythms, melodies, instruments and voices testify to the richness of an oral culture that still remains largely unrecognised.
