“Canciones del Fin” emerges as an Anthropocene reverie, cultivated within the quiet, private grief of the 21st century. In ross’s second work, canciones del fin, released in February, ross returns us to a planetary feeling and a planetary pain, but also to a call toward beauty, always capable of emerging from the half-light. This work, a gem in Tesorito’s growing trove, finds tenderness within suffering and the possibility of holding one another in the middle of a tremor.
This is music that does not ignore how we destroy one another and, in the process, lay waste to the earth, even as we love one another so deeply, even as we learn to say goodbye. I am writing these words less than a week after the largest-magnitude earthquake recorded in Colombia this century. In this present, what ross gives us feels prophetic and chilling, yet also beautiful and warm. “The fall is inevitable. Learning how to collapse is essential.”
