Music of Zaire, Vol. 1: Libinza: Peoples of the Ngiri River

Music of Zaire, Vol. 1: Libinza — Peoples of the Ngiri River paints a musical picture of daily life in 1970 for the Libinza tribes in the modern–day Democratic Republic of the Congo. Photographer Jacques Jangoux captures the region’s unique percussion played for rituals of life and death in these field recordings. Each track offers an example of the politics and behavioral norms that shape the community. These songs share the perspectives of elders, young people, and those on the social outskirts of their tribes. The liner notes include a map of the region, as well as photographs of the people and their musical instruments.

This recording is a companion album to Music of Zaire, Vol. 2: Bodjaba, Bamwe, Djamba — Peoples of the Ngiri River (FW04242). Please note that the liner notes for both volumes of Music of Zaire are the same.
