The two works that open and close the programme also have a clear connection with death. In the case of the Pièce héroïque, composed in 1878 for the inauguration of the organ at the Palais du Trocadéro in Paris, it seems plausible that Franck had in mind the recent Franco-Prussian War, which had so strongly reinforced the national identities of both countries. Reger’s chorale fantasies of 1900, meanwhile, are presented as a kind of three-scene tableau in which the final work symbolises the ultimate redemption of humankind.
